Going by an idea mooted by Dr. Krishantha Perera, a consultant physician of the Cancer Hospital – Karapitiya, The construction work of the new ward complex, put up at a cost of Rs. 70 million, was completed by the Navy and the financial support needed for the facility was extended by Relief attending of Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, Sri Lanka Cancer Society - Galle and many other donors.
The new ward complex is located in pleasant surroundings even with a beautiful pond in the vicinity. Further, a beautiful Buddha statue carved from rock has also been placed on the premises. The new ward complex will accommodate about 30 patients who come for residential treatment at the Karapitiya Hospital. The occasion was attended by Commander Southern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Kassapa Paul, officers as well as the staff members of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.
All who attended the event expressed their gratitude to the Navy for constructing such a magnificent ward complex in this plot of land which remained to be an abandoned site covered with giant taro plants, before the commencement of construction.
