    April 18, 2020

With the detection of the 59-year-old woman with Covid-19 on April 15th, within a matter of a few hours the intelligence services were able to track the first tier of persons whom she had interacted with. Her son is a manufacturer of face masks and he sells them to shops.

Hence, the intelligence services tracked the shops that he had visited to supply masks. There were 13 people in the first tier who had interacted with the positive person and they were sent to the quarantine centre operated by the Sri Lanka Air Force yesterday, said the Army Commander Lt. Gen. Shavendra Silva.

Addressing the media briefing of the National Operation Centre for the Prevention of Covid-19 this evening he said 222 persons who had undergone the quarantine process at the Army run Punani quarantine centre were sent home today after having done the PCR test. “On April 14 and 15th alone 875 PCR tests were conducted on those at the Punani and other quarantine centres. These PCR tests are conducted at various locations and even tomorrow we will be receiving the reports of another 200 PCR tests and another group would be released from the quarantine centres. Another nine persons who underwent the quarantine procedure at the Boossa Naval quarantine centre were sent home today having done the PCR tests. Today 3,954 persons who were in quarantine at the Tri Forces run quarantine centres were released and sent home. Accordingly, another 1,443 persons are currently in quarantine at the centres operated by the Tri Forces,” the Army Commander said.

He also noted that talks are being held with the President and Prime Minister regarding the Sri Lankans stranded overseas and that they hope to bring them back in a systematic manner and put them through a proper quarantine procedure.
