Government to purchase produce from farmers – contact the nearest government officer

    April 16, 2020

The government will mediate in purchasing the produce which farmers are unable to sell and based on the social benefits implemented by the Presidential Task Force, measures would be taken to grant financial provisions to the people, said the Director-General of the Government Information Department, Nalaka Kaluwewa.

The first phase of this endeavour was successfully completed on April 11 and 12 in Njuwara Eliya, Dambulla, Anuradhapura districts, while the second phase will focus on the Ratnapura and Hambantota Districts on the 15th and 16th, focussing especially on the purchase of the banana harvest.

In the other areas too the government is taking measures to purchase the vegetable harvests of the farmers without allowing it to go to waste. Therefore, the Information DG urged the farmers not to panic as the government has notified the relevant Government Agents regarding the purchasing of their crops. The Director-General also noted that all related issues faced by the people in receiving the relief package should be brought to the notice of the Government Agent closest to them or get in touch with the Divisional Secretary of their relevant areas and obtain solutions to their issues. He said however, that complaining about their problems to the media or other parties would not bring them the desired solutions.

The Information Department Director-General made these observations during a media briefing held at the Government Information Department yesterday (15).
