Meanwhile, Chairman of the Elections Commission, Mahinda Deshapriya’s letter informing his intent to resign from the post is yet to be accepted by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Sunday Observer learns. Speaking to the Sunday Observer the Chairman of the Commission said that once the President accepts his letter he will step down from the position.
“My resignation letter was drafted way before the November 18. However, I had to keep it till the 18 to be addressed to the President elect. It was on a later date sent to the President with copies to the Constitutional Council and Speker Karu Jayasuriya as its chairman,” Deshapriya said adding that he would resign from his position unless the provincial council elections are held by January. However, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya issuing a statement said that it is his view that Chairman Deshapriya should serve his full term and not resign prematurely.
