The people in exercising their franchise, have via the ‘ballot’ spoken and manifested their mandate in an election that was conducted peacefully and for which we express our appreciation to the Independent Elections Commission and all the officials for their commitment to a tedious task, well carried out.
The decisive election result or the voting pattern we observe, portrays a ‘divide’ or is being interpreted on the lines of ‘ethnicity’. The reality though is an affirmation of the democratic right of the voters and will not augur well in the interests of the country and its people as a whole, if such polarisation is used to create further rift and alienation among its citizens.
Gotabaya Rajapaksa has been elected to serve as the President of our beloved country Sri Lanka and it is our belief that he will, as demonstrated in his ‘Manifesto’ commit himself towards securing the rights, goodwill and harmony of all people,overcoming barriers of race, religion and politics that may be used to divert or stand as obstacles in his way.
In this context, the task before the President in ushering the country towards a reconciled and respected member of the United Nations is daunting and challenging and The National Christian Council of Sri Lanka (NCCSL), whilst affirming its fullest support and cooperation to The President in this effort, also calls upon all stakeholders in this land; political, religious, civil society, business community, organisations and the people at large to support and stand in solidarity in achieving this goal for our beloved nation.
