    PM : New constitution will devolve power within an undivided country Featured

    Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe Saturday requested the people of Vavuniya to elect Sajith Premadasa as President to accelerate the path of development through reconciliation.Addressing the youth and business community in Vavuniya, Mr. Wickremesinghe said the UNP is the only party with the strength and commitment to solve the problems of the war-torn North and East.Vavuniya Business and Youth Forum was held at the Vavuniya Cultural Center today under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

    Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said the party's presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa in his manifesto has stated the steps to be taken for power devolution when drafting a new Constitution.The Premier added that appropriate parts of the reports during the former presidents' tenures since President R. Premadasa will be taken into account to prepare a new constitution that will implement maximum power devolution protecting the unity within an undivided and indivisible country for all Sri Lankans."We plan to draft a new constitution with the participation of all stakeholders. You are all Sri Lankans. We will take measures to devolve power while protecting that Sri Lankan identity."

    The Prime Minister said like the war-torn north and east, the district of Moneragala is also underdeveloped and special assistance will be sought from the international community to accelerate the development work in those areas.Speaking further, the Premier said an international airport was opened recently in the north, which will develop tourism, hotels and other sectors."This will draw a lot of investment in the North and create more employment opportunities for the people of the north. We have also planned to set up new economic zones in Mannar, Pooneryn and Vadamarachchi. Similarly, we will develop the coastal belt from Nilaveli in the Trincomalee District to the Northern Province. When all this is completed Vavuniya will become a hub of this development. Our aim is to increase the income levels of the people in the North and East through this development program."

    At the meeting, the opportunity was given to directly present the problems of the businessmen to the Prime Minister and Mr. Wickremesinghe provided the solutions.Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, Power and Energy and Business Development Minister Ravi Karunanayake and UNP Vavuniya Organizer Diana Gamage were among those who participated in this event.
