Disclose how MCC agreement harms the country - Minister Challenges

    November 02, 2019

Minister of Finance Mangala Samaraweera today challenged the opposition leader Mahinda Rajapaksa to reveal how the US$ 480 million Millennium Challenge Corporation agreement harms the country.Minister Samaraweera said the opposition leader, who charges that signing the MCC agreement will harm the country, is trying to portray it as an American horror, without revealing the harm the agreement will purportedly bring to the country.

"I challenge the Leader of the Opposition and the other leaders of the Podujana Peramuna to inform the public if the MCC agreement will harm the country or the people and not to deceive the people at a time a presidential election is being held," Samaraweera said in a communiqu. He said that during a previous election campaign also, the opposition was spreading false rumors that plans are afoot to sell Sigiriya, Sinharaja and Galle Fort to the US to create an anti-American panic. "I hope people have realized that there is no truth in those propaganda."
The Minister noted that a fake letter said to be of Cardinal Malcolm Rajith is curently being circulated in social media claiming that the Cardinal opposes the agreement. However, the Archbishop's House has announced that the letter is a hoax."This clearly indicates that Mahinda Rajapaksa and Gotabhaya Rajapaksa have fallen to the lowest level of taking political advantage by using religious places of worship to prevent a defeat at the presidential election."
he Minister said it is sad to see that the opposition, being unable to bear the pain of loss when their defeat is clear at the election, resort to release such announcements."The opposition is trying to somehow secure the victory of its candidate by deceiving the public," he said.
