    Malwatte Mahanayake Thera calls for new laws to curb terrorism, extremism

    Mahanayake of the Malwatte Chapter Most Ven.Thibbotuwawe Sri Sumangala Thera yesterday stressed the importance of introducing new laws with regard to curbing terrorism and extremism which are detrimental to the country. The Mahanayake Thera added that these laws should be adopted in Parliament before the next Presidential election.

    The Malawatte Prelate commended political parties for bringing proposals to solve the present crisis in the country. The Mahanayake Thera also stressed that all parties should get together devoid of their political differences to implement them for the country’s well-being. The Mahanyake Thera made these observations when Megapolis and Western Development Minister Patali Champaka Ranawaka presented a copy of a document published by the Jathika Maga Mahajana Vyaparaya.
    The Mahanayake Thera said the Sri Lanka Freedom Party had prepared documents which has laid the emphasis on 11 areas including the banning the Burka and bringing a common marriage law. He said that since all parties seem to have reached an agreement over these issues ideologically. These laws can be adopted in Parliament soon. The Mahanayake Thera added that the country should introduce laws curbing terrorism soon.
    Minister Patali Champaka Ranawaka said a document titled Jathika Maga was issued to address the present issues without any political, religious or racial affiliations following the Easter Sunday attacks. “The Muslim community is prepared to co-exist with the other communities. There is a group in the country which tries to spread violence and hatred by vandalizing religious statues,” he said. Minister Ranawaka said that laws should be brought with regard to the Burka, Madrasas and Sharia University soon and the law should be common to all.
