CID assigned to investigate NTJ sterilization allegations - Speaker

    May 25, 2019

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said that the investigation into reports that a gynaecologist affiliated to the National Thawheed Jamaath (NTJ) had sterilized many unsuspecting Sinhala women had been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake asked if it was confirmed that such an incident had taken place.“Explain whether such an incident had taken place and the CID was investigating the Gynaecologist involved in the incident or whether such an investigation had not taken place and the CID was investigating the newspapers that reported such an incident,” the JVP leader said.

Speaker Jayasuriya responded by saying, “Such an incident had not been reported and the CID is investigating whether such an incident had taken place. I cannot comment on the Police investigations, but when I saw the report, I too got excited as it is a grave issue. Hence, let’s allow the police to conduct their investigations.”
JVP leader MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake yesterday prior to making his statement under Standing Orders 27/2 inquired from Speaker Karu Jayasuriya if he had obtained a clarification as assured on Thursday. In response to a question raised by Dissanayake, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said that he had called for a report on reports that a Gynaecologist affiliated to the National Thawheed Jamaath organisation had performed sterilization procedures on around 4000 women without their knowledge.
The Speaker noted that he had spoken to the Police over the telephone last morning as well and was informed that the investigation is being handed over to the CID. Dissanayake asked if the investigation was being carried out regarding the suspect Gynaecologist or the newspapers that reported the incident. The Speaker responded that the investigation was initiated regarding the incident. Meanwhile, Opposition MP Sudharshini Fernandopulle too raised the same issue and requested that a thorough investigation be launched into this incident.
