This is the first time such a program is launched not only in Sri Lanka but in the whole of the South Asian region. This program is the brainchild of Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam and guided by the Education Ministry. This health insurance scheme covers all school children between the ages of 5-19.

The insurer is Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation (SLIC) and it is being launched under the theme "Sadaa Surakimu Daye Daruwan".

At present there are 4.5 million school children studying in 11,242 schools which include government schools, private schools which receive aid, private schools that don't receive aid, International schools, and the pirivenas. All students have been registered under this scheme and data about them are being prepared at the moment.

 
There is no initial payment from anybody other than the government, who has allocated Rs 2.7 billion for this year.

There is a legal commission in insurance and on the request of Minister Kariyawasam it will be credit to a special fund to cover sicknesses that include cancer, bone marrow transplants as well as for special surgeries.

There are many benefits including a maximum coverage of Rs 200,000 per year while upto Rs 100,000 will be reimbursed for one admission while doctor’s charges for laboratory investigations will be reimbursed even without a hospital admission.

SLIC will issue a card which has to be produced when taking medicine. The insurance is based on government hospitals but it can be from government registered private hospital or even an Ayurveda hospital.
