Special Statement by Prime Minister today at Temple Trees

    June 14, 2017

The Cabinet of Minister has decided to direct the Police to immediately take all necessary steps in against instigators and perpetrators of violence and hate speech targeting any religious and ethnic groups in the country, said Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

He said that it is only a reaffirmation of their policies. President Maithripala Sirisena on 8th January 2015 was sworn in to establish reconciliation in the country. As well to establish national harmony. We have decided to gather and move forward with the people who suffered from a 30 year war.

“We are proud to be a Sinhalese and a Buddhist and also to be a Sri Lankan. As a Sri Lankan I respect all religions and all cultures. If someone degrades another religion or a culture, he cannot be a true Sri Lankan.  The good governance government provides opportunity with same rights for each and every Sri Lankan to live in harmony.”

He said that it has been assigned to the Police to conduct an investigation regarding several incidents where businesses owned by Muslims and mosques were attacked.

He said that they would take steps to arrest those who engage in violence against any other religion or ethnic group and produce them before the court. The police are examining those things. They have implemented the law during several times. He emphasized that not even one incident has been neglected.

“We all have experience regarding such incidents that took place in 2014. They affected the harmony of our country.  As well as to the dignity of the country. We are not ready to move to that era. We have no need to stoop down to such situation and we will not even allow it. Therefore, we have informed the police and other law enforcement institutions to protect law and order. We are able to enact new law through the Parliament if necessary.”
