A special meeting in this regard was held yesterday at the ministry auditorium between the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Nimal Siripala De Silva and the Three-wheeler Drivers’ Associations to inform them and obtain their ideas. The discussions were held regarding nine facts and in return the associations presented several proposals to the minister.
Among them, it was requested by the associations to increase the speed level from 40kmph to 50kmph. It will be discussed with the police and the relevant institutions before reaching to a consensus.
The associations were also very positive of the minister’s proposal to limit the import of three-wheelers and to increase the age limit of issuing driving license up to 35 years.
“These regulations are expected to be brought for the safety of the lives of the passengers and for the security of the drivers”, the minister added.
Department of Motor Traffic, Sri Lanka Police, Department of Attorney General, and Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation will work together to form this national policy with the support extended by the associations. The minister also expects the assistance from the passengers for the above purpose.
He further said that his ministry would not interfere into the price controlling process at any time and the ministry has no such powers. He also assured to inform the finance minister regarding the problems faced by the three-wheeler owners and drivers.
