The house, which met yesterday afternoon at 1.00.p.m, was turned in to a tense situation within a short period of time with the Minister of Regional Development Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka standing up to answer a question from opposition MP Dinesh Gunawardhane regarding the removal of the military security of the former President, Kurunegala District MP Mahinda Rajapakshe.

During the incident the Kegalle District MP Sandith Samarasinghe was injured, and was immediately admitted to the National Hospital Colombo.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya temporarily suspended the Parliamentary sittings with the tense situation and called for a party leaders’ meeting. All the party leaders at the meeting have condemned the attack and requested the Speaker to take necessary actions against the convicts following the Parliamentary Standing Orders and the Act of Privileges.

Several government ministers and MPs participating a press conference yesterday evening pointed out such incidents set bad examples for democracy and tarnish the image for the Parliament. Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe pointed out this incident is unlawful according to the Parliamentary Standard Orders and even the legal actions could also be taken.

Minister Gayantha Karunathilake said those group of MPs were behaving badly in the Parliament. According to him, a number of important businesses were on the order paper. State Minister Sujeewa Senasinghe, Wijayapala Hettiarachchi (MP), Mujibar Rahuman (MP), and Ashu Marasinghe (MP) were also present at the press conference.
