    Sri Lanka celebrates Second World Statistics Day in Colombo

    Sri  Lanka celebrated the second World Statistics Day  today (20)  with a national seminar at JAIC Hilton hotel in Colombo under the theme "Better Data- Better lives".

    It was organized by the Department of Census and Statistics (DCS) in cooperation with the Ministry of National Policy and Economic Affairs. 
     
     
    State Minister of  National Policy and Economic Affairs Niroshan Perera was the Chief Guest. Minister Perera making the key note speech said, "availability of reliable statistics and data are very important both for national and international activities. They contributed towards achieving an optimum level of performance for the betterment of the country since the day Sri Lanka got  Freedom in 1948 ".
     
     
    Messages from President Maithreepala Sirisena, the Prime minister and the Minister of  National Policy and Economic Affairs were presented at the occasion.
     
     
    Two special congratulatory video messages from Mr.Stefan Schweinfest, the Director, Statistics Division of UN headquarters  and Mr. Alain Sibenerel, a representative of the UNFPA were also shown at the event. 
     
     
    UNO declared the World Statistics Day in 2010 and the UN General Assembly gathered in June 2015 decided to declare the 20th October 2015 as the second World Statistics Day (WSD)  under the theme  "Better Data- Better lives" and since now on it will be observed on October 20 in every 5 years.
     
     
    State Minister of  National Policy and Economic Affairs Niroshan Perera, Secretary to the Ministry Mr.M.I.M.Rafeek, Secretary to the Ministry of Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs Mr.V.Sivagnanasothi, Deputy Governor of the Central Bank   Dr.Nandalal Weerasinghe, UN Representative Lankani Sikurajapathi, the Director General of the DCS A.J.Satharasinghe and a distinguished gathering from ministries, government departments , representatives from the government and semi-government agencies, UN agencies, funding agencies and  academics  were present.
