Provincial Minister of Education, Culture and Arts, Sports and Youth Affairs and Information Technology Ranjith Somawansa was also present at the event.Governor Salley said there are matters that have drawn his attention including the shortage of teachers and dilapidated school buildings.
“We have already called for graduate teachers to fill these vacancies and I have also allowed HNDE graduates to apply for these vacancies since there is a dearth of English teachers in the province,” he said.He has extended his support to supply potable drinking water to students and has granted a special allowance to schools to employ workers to maintain hygienic toilets, he said.
According to a recent survey conducted by a special committee of academicians, it was found that nearly 100 school buildings are in a dilapidated condition and some of them are even in dangerous conditions that could cause harm to students, the Governor said.He said he had also instructed that where necessary, old furniture should be replaced with new to facilitate students’ education.
