Highways and Investment Promotion Ministry Secretary D.C.Dissanayake said that the total estimated cost of the project for rehabilitation of the A5 road corridor from Badulla to Chenkalady is US $ 140 million.
The project is to be jointly funded by the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) which will provide US $ 60 million while the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) will provide US$ 60 million with the balance contribution being made by the Sri Lankan government.
The government has already signed two loan agreements to obtain a part financing for rehabilitation of the main road from Badulla to Chenkalady. The section from Peradeniya to Badulla has already been rebuilt and the stretch of the road from Badulla to Chenkalady amounting to 151.3 km are to be renovated under the this project. He said Cabinet approval has already been granted in this regard and the reconstruction work will be commence in the near future. "Bidding will be conducted through the national competitive bidding method," he further said.
