About 2,133 HIV positive persons have been detected in the country, said Sexually Transmitted Diseases Medical Specialist Dr. Dharshani Wijewickrama. She said if precautionary measures are not taken, people in every country are vulnerable to the HIV virus.
She said about 34 million HIV affected people have been reported in the world and 23 million of them are in African countries. She said a person with AIDS was reported first in Sri Lanka in 1989.
Dr. Wijewickrama said the number of patients are increasing every year. The majority of them are men. She said a patient develops symptoms about 10 years after contracting the disease.
