According to the Yala cultivation plan adopted by the local farming community and officials of irrigation, water distribution and agricultural activities, there are around 7,000 farmer families ready to grow soya as an additional crop, where the main crop grown by farmers is rice. Soya bean fields are expected to produce around 5,000 metric tons of soya beans at the end of the Yala cultivation period.
The Huruluwewa Mahaweli Zone of the Anuradhapura District is a major soya producing region according to figures from the Hurulu Ekabaddha farmers’ organization.
