Government gives priority for Protection of Mangroves

    May 13, 2015

A new project is being mooted by the Sri Lankan government to safeguard mangroves spanning thirty one thousand acres.

The Project for the Protection of Mangroves is being launched to further maintain Sri Lanka's position as the first State to comprehensively protect mangrove eco systems.

It was revealed at a news conference that 3.4 million US Dollars will be spent on this Project. It will be handled with the support of Non-Governmental Organizations under the supervision of the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment.

It is intended to re-cultivate mangroves on an extent of 9600 acres. A Mangroves Museum is also being planned. It is anticipated that the protection of mangroves will benefit vastly from the services mooted over the next five years.
