    Boost for Sri Lanka's Sustainable Agricultural Development

    A special discussion was held recently at the Ministry of Irrigation & Agriculture headed by Duminda Dissanayaka, Minister of Irrigation & Agriculture with the participation of Mrs. Beth S. Crawford, special FAO representative in Sri Lanka and the Maldives and Dr. D.S.P. Kuruppuarachchi, Programme Assistant of the organization.

    The discussion was centered around projects that have been implemented by the World Food and Agriculture Organization in Sri Lanka and new projects that are to be implemented in the future. Special attention was focused to enhance agricultural productivity and ensure sustainable growth, adopt productive farming systems and improved agro-technologies with a view to reduce the unit cost of production and increase profit, adoption of technologies in farming that is environmentally friendly and harmless to health, poverty reduction by enhancing the income and the living standard of farming community.

     

    Rapid agricultural productivity growth is fundamental for reducing poverty in Sri Lanka as nearly 90 per cent of the poor live in the rural agricultural economy. Therefore, it was noted that rapid development in food production while protecting the environment, water resources, and bio-diversity needs to be given high priority in the development strategies.
