    Japan grants Rs.10 Mn for water and sanitation project in Nuwara Eliya

    The Government of Japan has provided US$ 77,714(approximately 10 million) grant for the Project for Improving the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Nuwara Eliya Districtunder its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project scheme (GGP).

     

    The Project for Improving the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Nuwara Eliya District will be implemented by ADRA Sri Lanka in Nuwara Eliya district. The project aims to improve living standards and health status of underprivileged tea estate workers in four communities in the estates of Nuwara Eliya District, targeting specially women and small children, through provision of safe drinking water (with gravity-fed water systems) and awareness raising training in hygiene/sanitation.

     

    Japan provides its assistance to this project under the pillar ‘Mitigating of Vulnerability’ of the Country Assistance Policy for Sri Lanka. The Government of Japan is committed to reduce vulnerability of underprivileged and marginalized persons, improve their accessibility to services, education, employment etc and which in turn result in empowerment of those vulnerable groups becoming active contributors to the development initiatives of Sri Lanka.

     

    ADRA Sri Lanka Country Director Mr. Jayandra Seneviratne stated that “the development of this project has been collaborative, with the Alton Estate Community, Estate Management, Local Authorities, Engineers, the Japanese Embassy in Sri Lanka and ADRA Sri Lanka being involved in the process. This collaboration has promoted local ownership and local government recognition towards the proposed project. The project will also run participatory health and sanitation trainings in the communities parallel to the construction. ADRA Sri Lanka joins the Alton Estate Community in thanking the people of Japan for the grant that will surely change their lives!”

     

    The Grant Contract was signed between Mr. Nobuhito Hobo, Ambassador of Japan and Mr Jayandra Seneviratne,Country Director, ADRA Sri Lanka today (16) at the Ambassador’s Residence in Colombo.
