Govt. not prepared to engage in transactions subject to conditions

    February 26, 2015

Sri Lankan Government is not prepared to engage in transactions with other countries and monetary institutions subject to conditions, Minister of Finance Ravi Karunanayake said.

He said many countries have already pledged financial support to Sri Lanka and the  government aims  to expand trade with western countries rather than obtaining loans from such countries.   The government's monetary policy and financial discipline have mainly contributed to this measure. The local currency is at a stronger position.

Minister Karunanayake made these remarks after a discussion held with the former Finance Minister Ronnie De Mel, at the Ministry.

Mr. Ronnie De Mel has pointed out that the tax revenue of the government could be increased by strengthening  strategies of Institutions such as the Department of Inland Revenue and the Customs.
