    Prisons to screen visitors

    The Prisons Department has taken steps to set up high quality scanners in prisons to screen persons who visit inmates and parcels they bring to prisons.

    Prisons Commissioner General Rohana Pushpakumara said a feasibility study in this regard has been completed and first five scanners will be installed in Welikada, Dumbara, Mahara, Magazine and Colombo Remand Prisons at a cost of Rs. 60 million. These scanners will be installed in the prisons premises to prevent smuggling of unwarranted material into the prisons, .

     

    Prisons Commissioner General further said that security rooms for the scanners are under construction, according to the standards of the Atomic Energy Authority.
