    Sri Lanka:Large scale corruptions to be investigated according to law - PM

    The Anti-Corruption Secretariat set up by the new government of Sri Lanka wil investigate, large scale corruption and malpractices alleged to have taken place during the previous government in a very comprehensive manner and take legal action against those responsible at the earliest, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said.

    However, the Premier noted that his government was not prepared to usurp the proper legal process when conducting investigations in search of quick results, although some were expressing dissatisfaction over delays in taking action against the persons accused of corruption and malpractices.

     

    " We are aware that there has been large scale corruption in the past regime. We will take action according to the law and will not try to do anything out of the process" the Premier stressed while participating in an interview on a private TV channel, Hiru last night. This is the first interview by the PM since the completion of the Presidential election Jan 08, 2015

     

    Premier Wickremesinghe went on to say that some complaints will be investigated into by the Bribery and Corruption Commission and the Police, while the Secretariat will probe the others, especially the large scale ones.

     

    Wickremesinghe said, already the Government had sought help from several foreign governments and international financial institutions to track down mass financial fraud.

     

    He said that already Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera had approached the World Bank and US Department of Justice while Justice Minister Wijedasa Rajapakse will undertake a tour to England shortly to discuss the matter with British officials.

     

    "In addition, the Governor of Central Bank will approach his Indian counterpart," he added.

     

    The Prime Minister said that the authorities already have received information on  five large scale cases and were conducting further investigations.
