Some elements with vested interests have spread rumours claiming that the security forces are hindering the educational activities of the children and trying to create a fear psychosis among the community. These elements which seek to rekindle the fire of hatred constantly, try undermine the goodwill that is being developed between the people and the security forces.
Under the security forces scholarship scheme deserving children in the North receive a monthly financial grant of upto a maximum of Rs. 1300.00. Children from Year 1 to Year 13 receive these payments. A child in studying in Year 1 would have receive a total of Rs. 109,200.00 till he/she completes his education (Year 13).
In addition, students who enter the University for their higher education will also be entitled to a monthly grant of Rs. 2000.00 (A total of Rs. 120,000.00 for five years) till he completes his university education. These details were revealed by the military spokesperson Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya during the weekly press briefing held at the Media Centre in Colombo this morning (30th April).
The Sri Lanka Army intends to recruit 1000 personnel to its cadre and any citizen who fulfill the basic requirements are entitled to apply including those in the North.
The Kotalawela Defence University (KDU), the premier defence university in the country has opened its doors to civilian students to follow courses and join the prestigious alumni. Students can follow courses in Engineering, Information Technology, Management etc. Those who are qualify to apply for university entrance can send in their application before the final closing date on May 9th. Students have the option of paying their fees in installments.
The KDU is a degree awarding institute approved by the University Grants Commission and its degrees are internationally recognized.
