To uplift the handicrafts industry, three institutions were established under the National Crafts Council in 1982 for the welfare of the handicraft industry and craftsmen. They are the Jathika Shilpa Sabha, the National Handicraft Board and the National Design Centre.
In association with the three government institutions, under the Mahinda Chinthana forward vision, many programs have been organised to develop the traditional handicraft industry and rural villages. Many projects were implemented to develop villages with facilities such as workshops, machinery, equipment, infrastructure facilities, electricity and water. (ST/KH)
