"Mahinda Chinthana - Vision for the Future" has envisaged to establish a well - connected and efficient transportation system. Accordingly, the development of the road network which is currently underway, connecting 38,000 villages enables better access to nearly 80 percent of the population who lives in rural areas, the Ministry of Highways, Ports and Shipping revealed.
According to the Ministry, this will increase the mobility and enhance the quality of living standards of Sri Lankan rural population while utilizing the untapped resources in villages situated in difficult geographic locations for new production opportunities.
