Maj Gen Chandrasiri in a brief interview with the news.lk said that the special economic zone would cover the regions of Jaffna, Mullaitivu and Vavuniya. It would uplift the agricultural, fisheries and industrial sectors of the Northern Province. The project will be operative under several stages.
A building complex with 40 shops and office facilities will be constructed under the first stage, while the facilities of the Economic Centre will be expanded during the other stages. The Ministry of Cooperative s and Internal Trade has set aside the necessary allocations for the project.
With the coming up of the special Economic Zone the value of resumption of Yal Devi train service would be felt more, the governor predicted. “Products of North would soon be coming to the markets of Colombo and the prices of most of the essential items would go down drastically. It would help Northern Province farmers and industries economically. The train service will help people of both North and South while binding them together more and more,” the governor said.
