Fruitful harvest from Eastern sea belt

    November 04, 2014

The fishermen claim that they are reaping a very successful fish harvest at present from the Eastern sea belt.

They mainly attributed this successful harvest to the abundance of Para fish within the area. One of the fishermen in the Southkandi area in Eravur had netted a stock of fish worth two million rupees. The weight of a fish is said to be around six kilograms.

The fisheries sector plays an indispensable role in the economy of Sri Lanka contributing around 1.2% to the GDP.

Fishing industry in the Northern and Eastern provinces, which was hampered to a greater extent during the past three decades owing to the ethnic conflict has been revived with the dawn of peace. The Northern and Eastern provinces which accounts for around 60% of the coastline of the island have a huge potential.
