This will be demonstrated at the program scheduled to be held on 5th November 2014 at IBMBB premises. It will be done in two sessions; at 9.00 a.m. and repeated at 10.30 a.m.
DNA purification, Running a PCR with appropriate Molecular Markers and Visualization of the PCR products by Gel Electrophoresis as well as a video on these will be included in the activity.
What is DNA Finger Printing Technology ?
This is the method used in individual identification in criminal investigations and paternity/maternity testing by using DNA.
How does it work?
Although the human genome is very similar across all individuals, there are regions of variations found in non coding part of the genome. Repeated units of DNA that vary in length among individuals are such regions which occur anywhere in the genome. Scientists have found that one particular type of repeat, known as short tandem repeats (STR) can be used to differentiate individuals by comparing the length of considerable number of such repeats (eg. 9 – 13).
How is it done?
To perform a forensic DNA analysis, DNA is first extracted from a sample collected from the crime scene and from suspects.The DNA is then amplified using a method known as Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Thereafter, the amplified DNA is separated according to the size of the repetitive DNA by a method known as electrophoresis and comparative investigations are carried out.
Analysis of data is done by comparing with DNA from the crime scene and suspects.
