The main commemoration function will be held at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Conference Hall and a series of programs will be held in collaboration with other ministries and departments.
The National Safety Day was inaugurated following the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami on the Boxing Day of 2004 to commemorate the lives lost and to increase awareness among the public in such catastrophic disasters and educate them to prepare for such disasters.
Sri Lanka this year will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the disaster which struck 13 out of 14 coastal districts in the island. In preparation the Ministry of Disaster Management last month held a three-day conference with the participation of global, regional, national and local level partners and stakeholders to achieve a concise, focused, forward-looking, and action-oriented outcome.
