The aim of this step is to provide educational opportunities for the civil students in the Southern, Central and Eastern Provinces and for foreign students,

The Southern Campus of the University is planned to be constructed in three stages within a period of five years from 2014. Phase 1 will be completed by the beginning of 2015. The estimated cost of the overall project is LKR 2000 million and the financial cources for the project will be the President's Special Development Initiative Fund, Treasury Grants and self-generated earnings of KDU.

The construction work will be carried out by the Sri Lanka Navy.
