Achchuveli Industrial Estate will uplift SMIs and Northern Youth employment - Minister Devananda

Douglas Devananda, Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development, speaking at the ceremony held recently to mark the recommencement of the Achchuveli Industrial Estate said that the armed conflict which dragged on for more than 3 decades completely engulfing the Northern and Eastern Provinces of the country alike saw a sad end to the Achchuveli Industrial Estate. However, the Government consequent to defeating terrorism without any loss of time took steps deemed necessary to uplift the livelihoods of the affected, investing massively on infrastructure development of these two regions. The ceremony was headed by Basil Rajapakse, the Minister of Economic Development.

Speaking further, the Minister said that a total sum of Rs. 275 Million was spent for re-commencement of the Industrial Estate out of which Rs. 250 was a donation from the Indian Government and the balance Rs. 25 Million was contributed by the Sri Lankan Government. When once the project runs into its full capacity it could generate considerable number of employment opportunities to the youths in the Northern Region, added the Minister. He thanked the people of India and Indian Government for their generosity to help out the affected, on behalf of the people of the North and the Sri Lankan Government.

The Minister also thanked the Indian Premier Narendra Modi for requesting the TNA Parliamentarians to work with the Sri Lankan Government for finding a solution to the National question under the 13th Amendment to the constitution, which he had been voicing since inking of Indo-Sri Lanka Pact.

Basil Rajapakse, Minister of Economic Development speaking at the occasion said that since the conclusion of the armed conflict, the Government had been massively investing on the overall development of the Northern Province and the outcome was to the entire satisfaction of everyone.

Weerakumara Dissanayake, the Deputy Minister; C.V.Wigneshwaran, the Chief Minister of the Northern Province; Y.K. Sinha, Indian High Commissioner; Major General W.A. Chandrasiri, the Governor of the North; V. Sivgnanasothy, the Ministry Secretary; N. Rajabdeen, Chairman, Ceylon Industrial Development Board and a large number of people participated at the ceremony. (KH)
