    Number of irrigation projects throughout the island

    Number of measures have been taken to fulfill the water requirement of the residents in drought hit areas. Therefore, drinking water is being provided to those areas from the Mahaweli River and other water resources available, Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva said addressing a media briefing held in Colombo recently.

     

    The minister said number of irrigation projects are in progress throughout the island. The Nagadeepa irrigation scheme has been implemented to fulfill the water requirement of Badulla district. A sum of 2.5 billion rupees have been allocated for the Morana irrigation project. 80 percent of the construction of Wilakandiya project in Badulla has been completed.


    The Kaluganga reservoir project has been implemented under the grants provided by the government of Kuwait. The Uma Oya project is in progress to fulfill the water requirements of Moneragala district. Hydro power plant will also be built with parallel to this.

     

    In addition to this, the minister said Ging and Nilwala irrigation projects have been implemented to provide water to Hambantota district. (ST/KH)
