Under this project 60,000 houses will be constructed in Colombo Central and Colombo North while the Colombo South region will have 5,000 housing units. The Urban Development Authority has planned to allocate 300 acres of land for relocation of the under-served families.
The construction of 20,000 housing units has already commenced under this project and 5,000 units will be vested in the public by the end of this year. Each housing unit comprising two bed rooms, a living area, kitchen and an attached bathroom will cost Rs. 7 million. Each house is 400 square feet in extent.
This is the largest project ever implemented in the country. It is several times bigger than the Mahaweli project. (ST/KH)
