We cannot limit social reconciliation to reconciliation between nations only – Minister Basil Featured

    July 23, 2014

We cannot limit social reconciliation to reconciliation between nations only.  It should have a broader base covering not only nations, but also regions, villagers and all strata of society, said Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa.

Not only should this happen in our country but in all countries in the world.  As there is no reconciliation between various spheres and services, it has become impossible to maintain an efficient public service, Minister Rajapaksa said further, participating as the Chief Guest at a workshop on “Social Reconciliation and Use of Media” held at the Government Information Department on Wednesday (23).

“Social reconciliation should encompass all levels, all regions.   it must also be mentioned that there are people who try to disturb social reconciliation.  After 2005 social reconciliation was getting established.  Though there was conflict in some regions up to 2009, it prevailed between two fractions.  It was not on a social base but on a war situation” Minister Basil Rajapaksa said.

He further added, “It is recorded in our nation’s history that there had been many conflicts between different nations but it must be stated that no such situation arose during the Presidency of Mahinda Rajapksa.

“Media had to play a major role during the recent incident in Beruwala. We should be thankful to the media for their part to bring some reconciliation during this incident”, the Minister said.

Minister Rajapaksa also pointed out that Social reconciliation should cover the entire society including all levels and spheres and it should not be allowed to be limited to any one sphere.  It should cover all strata of society, he said.
