Chief Minister of the Northern Provincial Council C.V. Wigneswaran laid the foundation stone for the Mahindodaya Technical Faculty of the Jaffna Vembadi Girls' High School last week. He had previously laid foundation stones for Mahindodaya Technical Faculties in Velanai Central College, Vavuniya Cheddikulam Maha Vidyalayam and Mullaitivu Oddusuddan Maha Vidyalayam.
The national programme intends to strengthen the technical subject stream, which was introduced for the first time to the G.C.E. Advanced Level curriculum in 2013 to inculcate better technical skills among Sri Lankan students. Each Faculty consists of a Mechanical Engineering Technology Laboratory, Civil Engineering Technology Laboratory, Power and Electrical Technology Laboratory, and a Bio System Technological Laboratory equipped with the relevant classrooms and machinery.
Recommendations of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) have suggestions on various educational developments and improvements for students, including for those from conflict-affected areas. Recommendation 9.252, in particular, states the following: “Reduce and eventually eliminate the inequality in the availability of educational facilities in different areas of the country.”(KH/SI)
