Stories of Sinhala families being settled in North were lies

    November 21, 2014

Deputy Chairman of Committees Chandrakumar Murugesu said in Parliament today that some parties with vested interests had spread lies that Sinhala people were being settled in the North.

Participating in the committee stage debate on budget 2015 under the expenditure heads of the Ministry of Lands and Land Development, the Deputy Chairman of Committees said that 99 percent of Tamil people living in the North have received deeds for their lands.

He appreciated the services rendered by the officials of the Lands and Land Development Ministry to the people in the North. “Many owners of lands currently live abroad. If the provisions of Prescription (Special Provisions) Bill implemented such people live in abroad would be deprived of their rights. Therefore, we opposed its implementation. We request the government to act in a manner which would ensure the protection of rights of all.”

“The government gave deeds of lands to 20,000 families in Kilinochchi. We should appreciate that. People of 25 Grama Niladhari Divisions were resettled in a very short time after the end of the conflict,” MP Murugesu said. (Special Reporter/HC)
