Strengthening free health care: 1,100 new docs and 5,000 nurses to be recruited

    October 30, 2014

The Government would soon recruit 1,100 doctors and 5,000 nurses to strengthen the free healthcare service provided to people, Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena said in Parliament today.

The Minster said so while participating in the second reading stage debate on budget 2015.

Minister Sirisena said that Rs 181 billion had been allocated in the budget 2015 for the health sector. “That allocation is the highest ever allocation for the health sector made by any budget in this country,” he said.

The allocation would enable the public healthcare service to provide high-quality service free of charge at a competitive level though there are many private healthcare services.(Special Reporter/HC)
