    Decisions taken by the Cabinet at its Meeting held on 2014-06-19

    01. Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Information & Communication Technology Authority (ICTA), Turkey and the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka TRCSL) - this MoU provides a mechanism for technical and institutional cooperation with the purpose of contributing to telecommunication development in both Sri Lanka and Turkey. Particular areas of cooperation envisaged are technological development, universal access to telecommunication services, convergence and next generation networks etc. The proposal made by H.E. the President, to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding between TRCSL, Sri Lanka and ICTA, Turkey, was approved by the Cabinet.

    02. Strengthening of Ceylon Shipping Corporation Ltd. by Acquiring a Fleet of Ships - with the view to entrusting the sea transportation of coal and crude oil imported to the country exclusively to the Ceylon Shipping Corporation Ltd., the proposal made by H.E. the President, in his capacity as the Minister of Highways, Ports and Shipping, to strengthen the fleet of ships of the Ceylon Shipping Corporation Ltd., was approved by the Cabinet .

     

    03. 47th Annual Meeting of the Asian Development Bank held in Astana, Kazakhastan from 2nd to 5th May 2014 - a delegation headed by Hon, (Dr.) Sarath Amunugama, Minister (Senior) for International Monetary Cooperation and Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, including a team of Senior Treasury Officials represented Sri Lanka at the above meeting. At the meetings the delegation has had with the President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Director General, South Asia Region of the ADB, it has been highlighted that Sri Lanka has recorded the best portfolio performance last \ year. Fruitful bilateral discussions had also been held with the leaders of the People's Republic of China on further strengthening the bilateral relationship between the two countries and mobilizing more investors to Sri Lanka from China. The above information was furnished to the Cabinet by Hon, (Dr.) , Sarath Amunugama, Minister (Senior) for International Monetary Cooperation and Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning .

     

    04. International Monetary Fund / World Bank Spring Meeting - 2014 held in Washington DC from 7th to 13th April 2014 - a delegation headed by Hon. (Dr.) Sarath Amunugama, Minister (Senior) for International Monetary Cooperation and Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, including a team of Senior Treasury Officials and Central Bank Officials represented Sri Lanka at the above meeting. The International Monetary Fund had appreciated Sri Lanka's recent performance in terms of reduction of unemployment, inflation control, financial market achievements etc. and has stated that the Fund can provide further assistance to Sri Lanka. The above information was furnished to the Cabinet by Hon, (Dr.) Sarath Amunugama, Minister (Senior) for International Monetary Cooperation and Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning.

     

    05. Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan for Co-operation on the Training of Afghanistan Nurses in Sri Lanka - the proposal made by Hon, Maithripala Sirisena, Minister of Health, to extend the cooperation relating to the Healthcare Sector by implementing training programmes in Sri Lanka for Afghanistan Nurses and Healthcare Workers, as agreed to by the two Governments under the above MoU, was approved by the Cabinet.

     

    06. Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute for International Relations and Strategic Studies (LKIIRSS) of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and the Diplomatic Institute to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria - the objective of this Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is to promote and support activities that contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between Bulgaria and Sri Lanka. The proposal made by Hon. (prof.) G.L. Peiris, Minister of External Affairs, for signing of the above MoU, was approved by the Cabinet.

     

     07. State Visit by H.E. the President to the Kingdom of Bahrain - on an invitation extended by His Majesty the King of the Kingdom of Bahrain, H.E. the President, accompanied by a high level delegation undertook a State visit to that country and this had been the first ever State visit to Bahrain by a Head of State of Sri Lanka. During the officials meetings the. Leaders of the two countries had covered a wide range of bilateral .issues as well as regional and multilateral issues of mutual interests. Hon. Neomal Perera, Acting Minister of External Affairs furnished the above information to the Cabinet.

     

    08. Asian and African Parliamentarians' Capacity Development Project on the Integration of Population issues into National Development Frameworks held in Kampala, Uganda, from 10th to 13th February 2014 - Hon. Tissa Karaliyadda, Minister of Child Development and Women's Affairs, attended the above Conference which was held in Kampala, from 10th to 13th February 2014. The aim of the Conference was to further elaborate on the topics previously discussed at the Cambodian Conference and also to introduce other new ideas. On the issue of gender balance and gender equality in Sri Lanka, the Minister had explained to the delegates that the Sri Lankan Constitution guarantees equal rights without discrimination on grounds of gender to all citizens in the country. The delegates had appreciated the achievements made by Sri Lanka in the fields of population, education and health sectors and also the positive steps towards gender equity.
