Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs Minister Abdul Haleem yesterday informed Trustees of Mosques not to engage or permit any gathering of Jamaath to promote or propagate hatred or extremism in any form. Minister Haleem in a statement said the Board of Trustees of the mosque will be held responsible if such activities were conducted at mosques and they will be dealt with by the law.
UGC informs all state universities and Higher Education Institutes that vice Chancellors are authorized to decide the dates and modes of commencement of academic activities at any date from the 13th May 2019, once the Vice Chancellor is assured with the safety status and security of the university.
Heat wave advisory issued

The Meteorology Department yesterday, issued a notice requesting people to be cautious of a heat wave that some parts of the country might experience today. They observed that the maximum heat indexes in some areas have already increased.
The Ministry of Education has taken steps to commence the schools on Monday (06) following the announcement by the Security Forces that the security in and around schools has been confirmed. Accordingly, the number of students attending schools is increasing and the education activities of the schools are getting normal and the Ministry of Education has instructed all the heads of schools to take steps to hold the academic activities normally.
However, the Ministry of Education says it has received many complaints that some groups are making statements to disrupt the school activities and some principals and teachers have also been forcing the school children not to attend the schools.
The Ministry of Education has decided to take disciplinary action against such individuals and groups who engage in disruptive acts for various narrow political purposes and opportunistic personal goals. Accordingly, the Ministry of Education has issued a communiqu� announcing that information will be given to the Criminal Investigations Department regarding such individuals and groups for legal action.
A request has been made not to telecast the occasions when the security forces conduct search operations in houses and public places through the media. Furthermore, clear instructions have been given by President Maithripala Sirisena to the security forces not to allow participation of journalists and civilians when conducting search operations and it has to be conducted exclusively by the members of the security forces.
The Sri Lanka Army has advised school children to be on alert by avoiding contact with strangers and staying away from unidentified parcels,food packets and other objects. The Army has underscored the importance of following these guidelines for the safety of all.
Sri Lanka Police has allocated specific locations to park school vans and buses in Colombo when schools reopen.The second term of all government schools will commence on Monday (May 06) for Grades 6 and above while the commencement date for Grades 1 to 5 has been extended until May 13.

Strong winds up to 40-45 kmph can be expected over the island, particularly in Northern, North central, North-western and Southern provinces and in Trincomalee district, the Met. Department said.Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places over Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, Western and North-western provinces, it said. Fairly heavy rainfall about 75 mm can be expected at some places in the Galle, Matara, Rathnapura and Kalutara districts. Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in Uva province and in Batticaloa, Ampara and Polonnaruwa districts after 2.00 p.m.

The Department of Examinations has called for applications for the Ordinary Level Examination 2019. The deadline for submitting the applications has been set for May 24th.Applications for school candidates have already been sent out to the principals of each school and head monks of Pirivena institutes.

Cyclone ‘Fani’moves away from Sri Lanka

The Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘FANI’ (pronounced as FONI) over West-central Bay of Bengal to the Northeast of Sri Lanka, was located near latitude 15.2N, Longitude 84.1E at 11.30 p.m. of 01st May 2019, about 750 km northeast of Jaffna. It is likely to move north-northeastwards while moving away from the island towards the Odisha coast of India., issued by the Department of Meteorology.
The Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘FANI’ (pronounced as FONI) over southwest Bay of Bengal to the Northeast of Sri Lanka is likely to intensify further and very likely to move northwestwards till noon, 01st May, stated the Department of Meteorology.The Cyclonic Storm ‘FANI’ was located near latitude 13.4N, Longitude 84.5E at 08.30 p.m. of 30th April 2019, about 650 km northeast of Trincomalee. It is likely to recurve north-northeastwards towards Odisha Coast, India after mid noon today (01).The general public, Naval and fishing communities are requested to be attentive about future advisories issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regard.
LAND AREA:
Under the influence of this system, the showery and windy conditions will continue further over the island during the next few days (01st May – 03rd May).Showers or thundershowers will occur at times over most parts of the island. Heavy falls about 100- 150 mm can be expected at some places in the Uva, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, Western and North-western provinces and in Mannar district and also fairly heavy falls about (50-100) mm also likely at some places elsewhere.
Strong winds up to 60-70 km/h can be expected over the island particularly in central hills, Northern, North-central, North-Western, and Southern provinces and in Trincomalee and Batticaloa districts.
SEA AREA:
Wind will be south-westerly and speed will be 35-45 kmph in the Sea areas around the island. Wind speed can increase up to 50-60 kmph at times. Sea areas around the island can be rough at times.
Wind gust up to 70 kmph is expected in the deep sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota and the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankasanturai. These sea areas can be very rough at times.
Wind speed will be 150-160 kmph, gusting up to 200 kmph over the Sea areas (within 300 km from the center of the above system) in the Bay of Bengal and the said sea areas can be high to very high.
ADVISORY FOR NAVAL AND FISHING COMMUNITY
The fishermen are advised not to venture into the north-western, southern, south-eastern, north-eastern and northern sea areas until further notice.
The fishermen, who are in the northern parts of South-west Bay of Bengal and West-central Bay of Bengal, are advised to move into safer sea areas.
The fishermen at other sea areas are requested to be attentive on future advisories issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regard.
